A French Alliance
Benjamin Franklin, the aging statesman with a knack for diplomacy, found himself in a Parisian salon, surrounded by the intellectual elite of France. His mission was audacious: to convince the French government to support the American Revolution.
The French had long been wary of their powerful British rival. The prospect of weakening Britain was enticing, but they were also hesitant to commit resources to a war across the Atlantic. Franklin knew he had to play his cards carefully.
With his customary wit and charm, Franklin painted a picture of a fledgling American nation fighting for freedom and liberty. He emphasized the shared values between the two countries and the potential benefits of a strong American alliance. He even hinted at the possibility of a joint attack on Britain's colonies in the Caribbean.
The French court was intrigued. Franklin's arguments particularly impressed Count Vergennes, the French foreign minister. He saw an opportunity to strike a blow against Britain and to expand French influence in the Americas.
After much deliberation, the French government agreed to provide secret financial assistance to the American rebels. This support included loans, arms shipments, and naval aid. The French also recognized American independence, a significant diplomatic victory for the colonists.
Franklin returned to America a hero, having secured a vital lifeline for the struggling Revolution. The French alliance would prove to be a turning point in the war, ultimately leading to American victory and the birth of a new nation.
Scott and Jenn versus the History Channel
Just kidding…sort of.
Jenn and I joke all the time on Talk with History that we’re striving to beat the mighty History Channel. We are a mere 10-11 million subscribers away from catching them on YouTube. 🤣
“No more alien or paranormal shows!” we joke.
Of course, it’s all in jest, but many of our followers do acknowledge that it is true…we probably deliver more history to you than the History Channel does. (at least on their main TV channel)
What does that have to do with France supporting the colonies during the American Revolution?
France saw something in the fledgling nation across the Atlantic and decided to support the “young” upstart!!
We see ourselves as the “upstarts” of history content creation and we want to take folks with us. 🧳
Our mission is to educate, inspire, and show the world that you can go and experience it yourself!
